Animal Facts IV

  • The lush white coat of the arctic fox provides both warmth and camouflage in winter.

  • Shortened ears and thick, white fur are among the physical traits that arctic hares have adapted to survive in the harsh, frozen tundra.

  • Arctic skuas, also called parasitic jaegers, have a well-earned reputation as avian pirates, stealing much of their food from other birds.

  • An armadillo roots around the forest floor in search of food. Armadillos have poor eyesight but a keen sense of smell and long claws for digging.

  • Asian elephants, smaller than their African cousins, are highly endangered. The subspecies shown here is found only on Borneo and faces threats from the conversion of their forest habitat to agricultural use.

  • Only 370 or so Asian lions exist in the wild. A former royal reserve, India's Gir Forest, is the last home of this lion subspecies.

  • Atlantic puffins spend most of their lives at sea, but return to land to form breeding colonies during spring and summer.

Animal Facts III

  • The prehistoric-looking alligator snapping turtle is the largest of the North American freshwater turtles.


  • Indiscriminate eaters, Amazon horned frogs can grow to about the size of a small plate.


  • Saved from the brink of extinction, the American alligator now thrives in its native habitat: the swamps and wetlands of the southeastern United States.


  • With their large, sharp horns, bison are formidable foes. During mating season, bulls fight for the right to breed with harems of cows, but rarely duel to the death.


  • American bullfrogs will ambush and eat just about anything they can fit in their ample mouths.


  • Critically endangered, the prehistoric-looking American crocodile struggles to survive in pockets of shrinking habitat.


  • Ammonites are named after the Egyptian god Ammon, who is often depicted with rams' horns behind each ear.

  • The largest snakes in the world, anacondas can grow to 550 pounds (227 kilograms).



  • Found throughout southern Africa, Aardvarks use their keen sense of smell to sniff out their favorite food—termites.



  • Wings spread, this Adélie penguin waddles through an Antarctic colony. Its black tail gives it a tuxedo-like appearance. 





  • African elephants are the largest of Earth's land mammals. Their enormous ears help them to keep cool in the hot African climate.


 
  • Fiercely protective of his pride, or family unit, male lions patrol a vast territory normally covering about 100 square miles (260 square kilometers).

 
  • Known as African wild, painted, or Cape hunting dogs, these endangered canines closely resemble wolves in their pack-oriented social structure.


  • Wide-winged and long-lived, albatrosses are rarely seen on land, preferring to stay out on the ocean except to mate and raise their young.


  • The largest of all the gars, this megafish earns its name with a wide, crocodilian head and rows of sharp teeth.

    Anaimal Amazing Facts

    1. There are presently over a million animal species upon planet earth. 
    2. The reptiles have 6,000 species crawling in their habitats; and more are discovered each year. 
    3. There are over 70,000 types of spiders spinning their webs in the world. 
    4. Well, there are 3,000 kinds of lice. Yes, it is the lice we are prone to get due to lack of hair hygiene. 
    5. This is a mind-boggling fact – for each of the 600 million people there is about 200 million insects crawling, flying... 
    6. Mammals are the only creatures that have flaps around their ears.

    • The biggest of all the mammals on the land are elephants which can grow upto 4m tall and weight 7,000 kg.
    • Elephants live longer than all mammals apart from man, surviving up till the age of 80 in captivity.
    • Elephants in Africa are much bigger than Asia.
